深切悼念 Yu Richard Xu 博士,永远怀念。
In Loving Memory of Yu Richard Xu, Ph.D.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Yu Richard Xu, Ph.D., who passed away on September 27, 2026, at the age of 66, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Richard was born in Nanyang, Henan, China, a region known for its rich history and the many remarkable people who were born or lived there, including the renowned historical figures Zhang Heng, Zhang Zhongjing, and Zhuge Liang.
From an early age, Richard distinguished himself as an exceptional student. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Changchun College of Geology, graduating as a top student. He later came to the United States on a national scholarship and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Houston.
Richard went on to build an accomplished career in the energy and petroleum industry, with expertise spanning geophysics, mathematics, and computer modeling and simulation. He was the founder of BYsoft, where he led the development of multiple general-purpose software systems and large-scale geological exploration modeling projects. He was highly proficient in numerous programming languages and provided technical support, expertise, and guidance to several petroleum companies.
His technical contributions had a lasting impact. Software and products developed under his leadership continue to be used in petroleum exploration and research by major oil companies. Richard was also deeply committed to sharing his knowledge. He was patient and generous in mentoring and developing younger technical professionals, always willing to teach and help others grow. His depth and breadth of expertise earned him the admiration of his peers, and he was regarded by fellow professionals as one of the finest experts they had ever encountered.
Despite his many professional accomplishments, Richard never stopped learning. He remained curious, humble, and eager to embrace new knowledge and technologies throughout his life. In his later years, he became particularly interested in the development and application of artificial intelligence in petroleum exploration, continuing to explore new possibilities in his field.
Beyond his professional achievements, Richard was a lifelong explorer who was always curious and eager to learn something new. He had a deep appreciation for nature, architecture, and the arts, and he especially loved visiting museums. He enjoyed talking with people and learning from their stories and experiences. He loved biking, animals, skiing, and horseback riding. His love for animals began in childhood, when he even raised a little sheep as a boy.
Richard also loved driving and exploring the country by road. He and his wife shared many memorable adventures together, including long road trips all the way to New York, Key West, Yellowstone, and California. For Richard, the journey itself was always part of the adventure—there was always something new to see, learn, and experience.
Richard was a kind, humble, responsible, and joyful person. He treated his work and his commitments with great care, while approaching life with curiosity and optimism. He built lifelong friendships with colleagues and friends, many of whom remember him as a kind and happy soul. His warmth, generosity, intelligence, and genuine love of learning touched the lives of everyone around him.
His passing has brought immeasurable sorrow to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those who knew and loved him. His remarkable mind, gentle spirit, and generous heart will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
