We are here today to celebrate a life that was full of love, resilience, joy, and generosity. Calmer “Nayah” Lewis was born on November 30, 1981, in Castle Bruce, Dominica, to Leroy Lewis (deceased) and Alixia Jacob Jno Finn. At seven years old, her mother made the difficult decision to let her move to the United States without her. She settled in Houston with her father and older sister, where she was surrounded by strong Caribbean women. Her aunts Ake and Sylma, and family friend Annie, became mother figures and helped shape the woman she became.
Calmer had gifted hands and a creative spirit. She built a career as a hairstylist, known especially for her skill in caring for natural hair. Her work was never just about beauty; it was about helping people feel confident, seen, and valued. Outside of work, Calmer loved life. She enjoyed concerts, spending time with family and friends, and just like her dad, Leroy, she never turned down a good party.
Her faith was central to who she was. She regularly attended the 8 AM Mass at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church and lived her faith daily. You could see it in the way she volunteered to feed the homeless, prepared care packages for those in need, and gave selflessly, even when it meant sharing her very last. Calmer always rooted for the underdog and often offered discounted rates to clients going through tough times. She was someone her nieces and nephews could always talk to. She was a straight shooter; you always knew where she stood, but she still offered encouragement and compassion even when she did not fully understand your choices.
Calmer is survived by her three children, Trent, Alnayah, and Alvon, who were her greatest pride and joy. She was also a second mother to many, caring for her friends’ children as if they were her own. She will also be remembered by her siblings Calyon, Deroy, Dale, Carl, and Phelomen, as well as her nieces Mya, Rashawana, Jodi, Daeja, and Joyella, and her nephews Mycah and Kai. She held a special place in the hearts of her many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends both here and abroad.
If there is one thing Calmer leaves us with, it is the lesson of authenticity. She was true to herself, never putting on a mask to please others, and lived in alignment with her generous and caring values. She reminded us that life is meant to be enjoyed. She showed us how to give freely, work hard for what we want, and spend time with those we love.
Her memory will live on through her children, her clients, and the countless lives she touched. Today we mourn her loss, but we also celebrate the incredible gift of having known her. May we honor her by carrying her lessons forward in our own lives. Rest in peace, Calmer. You will be forever missed, but always remembered.
